During dinner in the Brothers’ Chamber, Duskren tells Ignatius and Carver that Darkon steals the memories of those who enter and that Darcalus Rex will one day restore them.

Artistic interpretation

The dissolving faces and places are a visual metaphor for Duskren’s claims, not literal magic witnessed during the session. Duskren’s appearance is the accepted visual baseline for the recurring NPC.
