The Power Beneath Watcher House
Hook
After the company broke Fiona Watcher’s hidden cellar ritual, its lingering power twice strengthened Rage when he deliberately mutilated the surviving cultist.
Evidence
- Four principal acolytes chanted inside a pentagram while lesser cultists at the chamber’s edge appeared to empower them.
- The cultists invoked “the devil, Strahd” throughout the battle.
- The party killed the principal acolytes and ended the active rite.
- Rage felt a surge of power after blinding the surviving lesser cultist and severing one of his hands.
- A second surge followed when Rage castrated the captive.
- Fiona’s arcane-focus amulet was already around Rage’s neck, but no connection between the amulet and the surges has been established.
- Hyskosa initially sensed no remaining evil after the ritual’s destruction.
- The house later animated, swallowed company members, and burned under Chip’s attack.
- The company escaped, while household NPCs left inside died. The maimed cultist’s final movements were not separately observed.
- Carver’s first study identified immortality as the grimoire’s subject; no connection to Rage’s surges has been established.
Current understanding
- Some supernatural force remained active after the cult’s ritual collapsed.
- The power responded specifically to deliberate acts of cruelty, or at least appeared to do so twice.
- Its source, duration, effect, intent, and price are unknown.
Open questions
- Did the power come from the ritual, Strahd, Fiona’s amulet, the house, or another presence?
- What did the surges change in Rage?
- Will the power return, demand greater cruelty, or affect anyone else?
- Can it be identified, resisted, removed, or safely tested?
Next steps
- Examine Rage and Fiona’s amulet for a lasting change.
- Study the recovered manifesto and grimoire for possible connections.
- Follow up on Siv’s watch before attempting to inspect the burned site.
- Watch for further surges or changes in Rage.
