Strahd’s Dinner Invitation

Hook

Strahd has invited the company to dine at his castle. The letter reached Carver through a distressed Danica at the Blue Water Inn.

Evidence

  • The company asked Two Hundred Summers about the invitation. He advised fearing Strahd’s oppression and described the lord’s return from death. He offered the Amber Temple and Klorr as other routes toward understanding the domains; no reply or travel decision was recorded.
  • Danica said an old man asked her to deliver the invitation. His identity is unknown.
  • The company has not met Strahd and has just affirmed its opposition to him in conversation with Soldar.
  • The party originally sought Strahd for answers about Azalin’s ritual and the red star; the invitation may provide an opening, but his intentions remain unknown.
  • Carver received the paper. The transcribed invitation addresses the company as “My friends” and is signed “Your host, Strahd von Zarovich.”
  • Strahd claims he brought the company to his land and alone can release it. These claims have not been independently verified.
  • He invites them to dine in civilized surroundings and promises that their passage to his castle will be safe. The letter does not explicitly promise safety during dinner or on the return journey.
  • No acceptance, reply, departure, or deadline was recorded.

Open questions

  • What does Strahd want, and will the company accept?
  • Can Strahd substantiate his claims about bringing the company here and controlling its release?
  • What protection, if any, does his promise of safe passage actually offer?
  • Who delivered the letter?
  • Do the temple and Klorr offer better routes toward the answers the company seeks?
