Kargatane
At a glance
The mortal outer organization serving beneath the supernatural Kargat: recruiters, patrols, mercenaries, spies, and wererat agents who exercise open authority in Martira Bay.
What they want
Expand their influence, carry out the Kargat’s orders, and seize opportunities created by Darkon’s collapse. Their agents have targeted rival faiths, watched the streets, and pursued control beyond Martira Bay.
What the party knows
- Black Lily hired the party to assassinate High Sentinel Ablander and claimed the Kargatane sought to infiltrate the Eternal Order.
- Black Lily described himself as a recruiter overseeing mercenary work and reporting monthly to a Kargat contact.
- Uniformed Kargatane patrols exercised open authority throughout Martira Bay.
- The organization has at least an outer circle and a second circle; one elderly member claimed the inner circle.
- Dillo appeared to hold a rank comparable to Black Lily’s, while Aldo and the Dockside Men belonged to the outer circle.
- Kargatane scarecrows observed travelers and answered the passphrase “the crimson retinue” by reporting what they had seen.
- Black Lily’s patron was Darian Corvrick, a vampire and full Kargat member.
- Black Lily arranged the party’s Castle Avernus expedition, including funds, a coach, and the treacherous driver Vermoth.
- Allaric Van Stradleheim urged the party to exploit the Eternal Order’s collapse, seize power through the Kargatane, and target Il Aluk.
- The party confronted and killed Black Lily, declaring its business with the Kargatane over.
- Martira Bay guards later surrounded the Rat House under a Kargat vampire’s supervision, suggesting the city’s mortal authorities remained aligned with the hierarchy.

Standing with the party
Hostile former sponsor. The party killed Black Lily and fled Martira Bay while the larger hierarchy remained active and dangerous.

- How are the outer, second, and inner circles organized?
- How will the Kargatane respond to Black Lily’s death?
- What operation was underway at the Rat House?
- What did the children who warned the party away from Black Lily know?
